How well spoken are you?
Twelve honest questions across the six dimensions of the Wellspoken Index. You get a level and a read on each dimension. No signup.
When you explain something complicated, people:
What counts as being well spoken
Being well spoken means organizing a thought clearly and delivering it so a listener can follow it without working at it. It is a delivery skill rather than a vocabulary one. Someone with an enormous vocabulary who buries the point is harder to follow than someone plainer who leads with it.
Accent is not part of it. A listener adjusts to an unfamiliar accent within a sentence or two, and then stops noticing. What they do not adjust to is an answer with no shape, or one that takes ninety seconds to reach a point that needed fifteen.
The four speaking bands, and where the cutoffs fall
Twelve questions score 0 to 3 each, so the total runs 0 to 36. That total maps to one of four bands.
| Band | Score | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Developing | 0 to 15 | The raw material is there. You have the foundation of a good speaker. A few focused habits, a tighter structure and fewer fillers, would lift you quickly. The fastest progress of any band starts right here. |
| Solid | 16 to 23 | Clear most of the time. You communicate clearly in most situations and you are well past the basics. The gains now come from polish: trimming length, steadying your nerves, and using pauses on purpose. |
| Sharp | 24 to 30 | People listen when you talk. You are a genuinely strong speaker. Your structure holds, you sound assured, and you are easy to follow. Small refinements are what separate sharp from exceptional. |
| Exceptional | 31 to 36 | Strong across the board. You communicate at a high level on every dimension. You are organized, concise, confident, and clear. Your edge now is holding that standard under real pressure. |
The six dimensions this quiz reads
Each question feeds one of six dimensions, the same ones the Wellspoken Index scores from an actual recording. Structure is how logically an idea is sequenced. Conciseness is how efficiently you reach the point. Confidence covers hedging and inflection. Clarity is articulation. Filler control is the rate of um, uh, and like. Pace is speed and variation.
Splitting the result this way matters more than the overall band, because the dimensions rarely move together. A common pattern is strong structure with weak filler control, which reads to a listener as a well-organized speaker who sounds unsure. That is one habit to fix rather than a general speaking problem.
Where a self-assessment gets it wrong
You are reporting how you think you sound, and the gap between that and a recording is usually largest on filler rate. People stop hearing their own fillers within a few seconds of starting to talk, so a self-rated filler score tends to come in higher than a measured one.
Pace is the second most misjudged. Speaking fast feels like urgency from the inside and reads as nerves from the outside. If you want the measured version of either, the filler word counter and the speaking speed test both run free in the browser with no signup.
Questions
How is the how well spoken are you quiz scored?
Twelve questions each score 0 to 3, for a total range of 0 to 36. That total maps to one of four bands: Developing at 0 to 15, Solid at 16 to 23, Sharp at 24 to 30, and Exceptional at 31 to 36. Each question also feeds one of the six Wellspoken Index dimensions, so you get a per-dimension read alongside the overall band.
What are the six dimensions of speaking this quiz measures?
Structure, Conciseness, Confidence, Clarity, Filler control, and Pace. These are the same six dimensions the Wellspoken Index scores from a real recording, which is why a self-assessment here and a scored session in the app describe your speaking in the same terms.
Is a self-assessment quiz accurate?
It is directionally useful and it is not a measurement. You are reporting how you think you come across, and most people misjudge at least one dimension, usually filler rate, because you stop hearing your own fillers. Treat the band as a starting hypothesis and confirm it against a recording.
What counts as being well spoken?
Being well spoken is organizing a thought clearly and delivering it so a listener can follow it without effort. It covers how you structure an idea, how efficiently you get to the point, and how assured you sound. Accent is not part of it, and neither is vocabulary size.
How long does the quiz take?
About two minutes. Twelve questions, no account, and no email required to see your result.
