Wellspoken Institute

Communication access for the people who have been locked out of it.

Accented speakers, ESL learners, and first generation college graduates face measurable economic penalties in hiring, promotion, and client facing roles. Not because of what they say. Because of how they say it.

Communication coaching has historically been available only to people who can afford executive coaches at $200 to $500 per hour, or who attend elite institutions with professional development programs built into the curriculum.

The Wellspoken Institute closes this gap.

What we do

Access program

We license the Wellspoken speaking and communication platform from Wellspoken Labs and make it free or deeply subsidized for adult ESL providers, community colleges, workforce intermediaries, immigrant serving organizations, and refugee resettlement agencies.

Research program

We conduct independent studies on AI driven coaching effectiveness for ESL learners and first generation Americans, in partnership with university research partners and institutional review boards.

Equity data initiative

We publish findings on communication skill gaps by demographic and the economic outcomes they shape, so the field can move past anecdote and onto evidence.

Who we serve

  • Non native English speakers in US workforce programs and adult education classes
  • First generation college students and graduates entering professional roles
  • Immigrants in citizenship and workforce readiness programs
  • Refugees rebuilding professional careers in the United States
  • Adults in WIOA funded workforce development programs and AEFLA funded adult education

The technology behind the Institute

The Wellspoken platform analyzes speech across structure, conciseness, confidence, pronunciation, filler rate, and pace, and produces a 1000 point score called the Wellspoken Index. Learners practice with guided drills built around real communication situations: interviews, briefings, group conversations, professional small talk. They get instant feedback on the things employers actually screen for, and improvement compounds with daily practice.

The same technology that paying customers use is what the Institute provides to underserved learners through partner organizations.

About the Institute

The Wellspoken Institute is the philanthropic arm of Wellspoken Labs. The Institute exists to make our communication coaching technology accessible to the populations who need it most and who would otherwise be priced out of professional development. This is the same structure used by Mozilla Foundation and Mozilla Corporation, Khan Academy and its for profit ventures, and Wikimedia Foundation and its commercial partners.
