A 200 word speech takes about 1 minute 20 seconds at an average speaking pace of 150 words per minute. At a slower 130 it runs close to 1 minute 32 seconds, and at a fast 170 it lands near 1 minute 11 seconds. That whole spread sits inside the ninety seconds most standups give each person, which is the real reason to write 200 words down. What fits in 200 words

Two hundred words covers what you shipped, what you are on next, and one thing in your way. Or a self introduction: who you are, the work you do, and one hook people can ask about afterwards. About twelve to fourteen sentences. There is room for one number and one name, so choose them deliberately. Anything you would describe as background gets cut at this length.

A structure that fits

1. 1Headline, 25 to 30 words. Lead with the outcome. 'Checkout is live for 10 percent of traffic and conversion held flat' tells the room more than a list of tickets.
2. 2The detail worth their attention, 70 to 90 words. The one item that changes what somebody else does today.
3. 3Next, 40 to 50 words. What you are picking up, with the date you expect it done.
4. 4Ask, 30 to 40 words. Name the person you need something from. 'Marcus, I need the staging keys by Thursday' beats 'blocked on infra'.

Before you deliver it

Ninety seconds gives you no recovery time, so rehearse the first sentence until it is automatic. Standups run late and you will often start talking before you feel ready. Practice the version where you get interrupted at the halfway mark and still have to land the ask. Say it once while walking around, because sitting down flattens your pace.
