How many words is a 30 minute speech?
A 30 minute talk is about 4500 words at an average speaking pace of 150 words per minute. At a deliberate 130 that is 3900 words, and at a fast 170 it is 5100. Almost nobody writes 4500 words for a half hour, and the people who do sound like they are reading. At this length the count works as a planning ceiling, telling you that a section you have given five minutes needs roughly 750 words of material behind it. Build modules and time them one at a time.
What fits in 30 minutes
This length is the workshop segment and the short keynote.
Four and a half thousand words covers a full teaching arc with practice built into it. A workshop segment fits a concept, a demonstration, an exercise the room does for six minutes, and a debrief. A keynote at this length fits three stories and a spine that connects them. Thirty minutes is also the first length where attention needs an active reset, which is what an exercise, a poll or a direct question buys you.
A structure that fits
- 1Open and contract, 400 to 500 words. Tell the room what they will be able to do at the end, and how the half hour is shaped.
- 2Module one, 900 to 1100 words. Concept, then a worked example from your own work with real numbers in it.
- 3Reset, 200 to 300 words plus the activity itself. A question to a neighbor, a poll, or a two minute exercise. Attention drops around minute twelve and this brings it back.
- 4Module two, 900 to 1100 words. The harder case, including where the concept fails.
- 5Practice and debrief, 800 to 1000 words of your own talking wrapped around a six minute exercise. Exercise minutes eat the clock while you say nothing, so subtract them from the word budget.
Before you deliver it
Rehearse modules separately and time each one, since a 30 minute session overruns unevenly. One module runs four minutes long in every single rehearsal, and that is the module to cut. Then do one complete run with a real clock and a real exercise timer, standing, including the silence while the room works. Silence during an exercise feels endless from the front and costs you real minutes, so budget it as speaking time.
