How many words is a 2 minute speech?

A 2 minute speech is about 300 words at an average speaking pace of 150 words per minute. A deliberate 130 gives you 260 words and a fast 170 gives you 340. Two minutes is the first length with a middle, which makes it the first length where a talk can sag. Toastmasters times Table Topics with a green light at one minute and a red light at two, and the timer is a person holding cards, so the limit is real. Write to 260 and you will finish inside it every time.

What fits in 2 minutes

This length is the standup update, the Toastmasters Table Topic and the two minute pitch round.

Three hundred words carries one point developed all the way through, or one situation plus what you did about it. A standup update fits what shipped, what is blocked, and what you need from the room, at roughly eighty words each. A Table Topic answer fits a position, one example from your own life, and a reason the answer matters to whoever asked. Two examples will crowd each other out.

A structure that fits

  1. 1Position, 30 to 40 words. Answer the question in your first sentence. Table Topics judges mark you down for circling before you commit.
  2. 2Example, 120 to 150 words. One scene with a date, a place and a name. 'Last March, in a Tuesday planning call, my manager asked for the forecast three days early.'
  3. 3Meaning, 70 to 90 words. Say plainly what the example proves. This is the beat people skip once nerves speed them up.
  4. 4Close, 30 to 40 words. Return to your opening sentence in different words and stop.

Before you deliver it

Two minutes is short enough to rehearse ten times inside half an hour, so give it ten full runs. Time every run and write the number down. Once the spread across ten runs sits under fifteen seconds, the talk is stable. Table Topics arrive with no warning, so practice starting from a prompt you have never seen while holding the same four beats.
